WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – After the 15th-ranked Old Dominion Lady Monarchs sent the game against No. 8 Wake Forest into overtime, junior Catalina Barahona scored her first goal of the season to secure the 3-2 upset over the Demon Deacons.

The Lady Monarchs are now on a four-game winning streak and improved to 5-1 on the season, while Wake Forest fell to 5-2 overall.

ODU took a 1-0 lead over the Demon Deacons heading into the intermission after redshirt freshman Carrie Sensenig scored her first goal of the season at the 11:36 mark off an assist by senior Teisha King.

The defense for both programs played well in the first half, as the two teams combined for just five shots. ODU recorded three shots on goal, while WF notched just two. Lady Monarchs’ keeper Kealsie Robles tallied one save in the opening 35 minutes and ACC Player of the Week Valerie Dahmen stopped two of the three ODU shots.

The Demon Deacons tied the game a little over ten minutes into the second half, as Jess Newak converted on a penalty corner for her fifth goal of the season. Two minutes later Madi Julius found an open Julie Grashoff who floated the ball over the ODU keeper to give Wake Forest a 2-1 lead with 22:15 left to play.

The Lady Monarchs continued to put pressure on the Wake Forest defense and tied the game four minutes later. Senior Sarah Breen scored the equalizer off a hard hit shot from the top of the circle that whizzed past the goalie and into the back of the cage.

Neither team would score in the final minutes, as the game went into overtime. In extra time in field hockey, the two teams play 6-on-6 plus the keeper and the first team to score earns the victory.

Both teams had an opportunity to end the game within the first three minutes of overtime, but could not capitalize, until Barahona secured the ball on the left side of the field. She dribbled her way deep into the circle and flicked the ball over the goalie’s hand to secure the upset for the Lady Monarchs.

For the game, Old Dominion held a slight 9-7 edge in shots over Wake Forest, while both teams posted three penalty corners. Robles earned her fourth win of the year and finished the game with two saves, while Dahmen suffered the loss and stopped three ODU shots.

Breen moves closer to the 100 career points mark (98 total) after scoring her team-leading eighth goal of the season. She also leads the team in points with 17. Barahona’s game-winning goal was her first of the season, while Sensenig produced her first collegiate goal of her career. King assisted Sensenig’s goal, which marks her third helper of the season.

Grashoff and Newak scored for the Demon Deacons, while Jessy Silfer, Shannon Eby and Julius each tallied an assist.

The Lady Monarchs will be back in action on Sunday, when they take on No. 7 Duke at 1:00 p.m. in Durham, N.C. Live stats and video will be available and can be found on the ODU field hockey schedule page.
