NORFOLK – The Old Dominion University men’s and women’s basketball programs will receive additional national television exposure this winter on the Fox Sports Network and the CBS Sports Network, as announced today by Conference USA.
The Monarchs, who posted a 27- 8 record and advanced to the semifinals of the NIT tournament at Madison Square Garden, will be featured twice on CBSSN and twice on the FOX network. The Lady Monarchs, (21-13 last season) will be featured twice on FOX. The American Sports Network, which televised 15 ODU men’s games last season, will announce its C-USA game selections in the upcoming weeks.
“We are very excited to have a national platform for our program and to showcase our University and arena,” says men’s basketball coach Jeff Jones. “We are creating great rivalries with many of our C-USA opponents, which creates an electric home atmosphere for television. We look forward to hosting both Fox and CBS at the Ted.”
On Thursday, Jan. 7, the men’s and women’s basketball programs will dominate the airwaves from 7 p.m. – 11:30 p.m., with the women hosting long-time rival Louisiana Tech at 7 p.m. on the FOX Sports Network, followed by the Monarchs game at LA Tech at 9:30 p.m. on the CBS Sports Network. Other televised games include UAB at ODU on Jan. 14 on CBSSN, Middle Tennessee at ODU on Jan. 16 on FSN, and UTEP at ODU on Feb. 25, also on FSN.
"The LA Tech game will allow us to showcase two programs with winning traditions, as well as a historic rivalry. Last year's game was exciting as the final score came down to a last second buzzer beater,” says Lady Monarch coach Karen Barefoot. “Two of the top-four winningest programs in the country will tip-off in Norfolk that night for a great basketball game!"
In addition to hosting the Lady Techsters on Jan. 7, the Lady Monarchs contest at Charlotte on Jan. 3 will be carried by FSN at 1 p.m. Old Dominion is just three wins away from becoming the fourth program in the nation to achieve 1,000 total program wins, joining LA Tech, Tennessee and James Madison.
