NORFOLK, Va. – The ODU women’s soccer team (1-1-0) will welcome the UNCW Seahawks (0-2-0) to the ODU Soccer Complex on Thursday, Aug. 27 for a 7 p.m. showdown. The Lady Soccer Monarchs will not be back in action at home again until Sept. 18 when they take on George Mason after a stretch of five straight away matches.
ODU will enter Thursday’s contest after splitting games last weekend, falling to VCU 4-2 Friday night on the road before returning home and taking down Canisius, 3-0.
So far on the young season, the Lady Monarchs are led in scoring by newcomer Iris Achterhof, who recorded two goals in the victory over Canisius. Kira Laurento, Kathryn Hill, and Madison Hogan have each scored one goal and have also added an assist so far for ODU. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Erin Kinz has made a combined seven saves and compiled a clean sheet against Canisius.
UNCW enters Thursday’s matchup after dropping back-to-back games. The Seahawks fell to Appalachian State by a 3-2 final count in their season opener after the Mountaineers scored three unanswered goals in the last 16 minutes to steal what looked like a likely UNCW victory. The Seahawks were then overpowered by Virginia 8-0 on Sunday.
Seniors Maddie McCormick and Katrina Guillou lead the way for UNCW, each having one goal to their credit so far. McCormick also notched a goal in the squad’s 2-1 exhibition loss to UNC, who was ranked No. 5 in the NSCAA Preseason National Poll.
The UNCW women’s soccer team is coached by Paul Cairney in his 20th season at the helm of the program. He has tallied 181 wins as head coach and has churned out eight winning seasons in the last 13 years. He has also sent six different squads to the CAA Championship final game in the last nine years, including the 2009 team that earned a conference title.
