NORFOLK, Va. – ODUSports is set to introduce the 2015 field hockey newcomers in three installments. The second installment of the Old Dominion field hockey incoming class features Bailey Quinn, Clara Meschini and Alexa Ostoich.

“We had just an excellent spring as a team, and have created a really solid foundation for this coming season,” said head field hockey coach Andrew Griffiths. “The incoming group is large in number, diverse in background and playing styles, and they are a strong group academically. We look forward to the challenge of integrating them into our team, and to an exciting season ahead.”

Quinn attended Phoenixville Area High School in Pennsylvania where she was a four-year starter on the varsity squad. She was named the Most Outstanding freshman, sophomore, junior and senior. She earned First Team All-Area honors and was named the Phoenixville Area High School Outstanding Female Athlete as a sophomore after leading the team in both goals and assists to tally a team-leading 23 points. She continued her success as a junior, earning the team’s Outstanding Offensive Player award and Second Team All-Area.

Quinn put together an impressive senior campaign, leading the nation in goals with 41. Her goal total also broke the previous school record of 29 goals in a season, which helped lead the team to its first state playoff berth since 2001. She tallied 11 games with at least two goals and scored eight goals on three different occasions. She earned Philadelphia Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Week honors during the season and at the conclusion of the year she was named the team’s Most Outstanding Offensive Player, First Team All-Area and All-Mercury Player of the Year. Quinn is also a standout in the classroom, earning Honor Roll accolades in 2011, 2012 and 2013.

“Bailey is a natural goal scorer and finisher,” said Griffiths. “She is smart with her positioning in the attacking end, and scored a lot of goals to help lead her high school and club teams to success. As she transitions to the speed of the game at the next level, she can become a dangerous forward for us.”

Meschini travels to ODU from Argentina, where she was a member of the “Marista Rugby Club” from 2002-2015. She also helped the team take first place at the Annual Local Tournament in 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014. As part of the First Division Club team, she helped the squad garner third place at the Regional League E at the Marista Regional Tournament as a right midfielder in 2013.

She also took part in the Under 18 division as a midfielder, helping the team place second at the State Tournament on two occasions.  Meschini also led the Under 16 All-Star State team to a second and third place finish at the National Tournament in Mendoza, Argentina.

“Clara impressed us with her work ethic and approach to learning,” notes Griffiths. “She has a strong, low tackle, and her understanding of the game and movement is great. She was the number one student academically in her class at her high school, and she was born in Minnesota, so it was a natural move for her to come back to University in the United States.”

Ostoich attended Villa Maria Academy in Pennsylvania, where she was a four-year member of the field hockey team. Over her career, she helped lead the Hurricanes to four AACA League Championships, three District Championships, two State Championship final appearances and a State Championship. As a sophomore, she was named All-Main Line Honorable Mention, while she earned All-State Second Team, All-Area Second Team, All-Main Line Second Team and was selected as an AACA All-Star as a junior.

She was named a captain for her senior season and helped the team claim the PIAA Class AA state championship. At the conclusion of the season, she was named All-State First Team, All-Area First Team, All-Main Line First Team, NFHCA All-Region Second Team and was once again an AACA All-Star team selection. Ostoich was also a member of the True North Academy club team where she led the team to a Festival gold medal in 2014 and a NIT gold medal in 2015.

“Alexa is a smart, versatile player who has played in defensive midfield for her high school team and forward on her club team,” added Griffiths. “She understands the game well and is intelligent enough on the field to play effectively in different systems.”
