NORFOLK, VA—Old Dominion scored four runs in the sixth inning and relievers Jake Josephs (Fairfax Station, VA.) and Nick Hartman (Katy, TX.) pitched six scoreless innings as the Monarchs (25-24/11-15) defeated LA Tech (23-24/7-18) Saturday night in a C-USA contest, 4-2 on senior and alumni night. The win, coupled with Charlotte’s 11-10 loss to Southern Miss puts the Monarchs in eighth place.
The Bulldogs led 2-0 on a sacrifice fly RBI by Bre’shon Kimbell in the first inning and an RBI groundout by Colby Johnson.
With one out in the sixth inning Connor Myers (Middletown, MD.) doubled, then scored on a single by senior catcher Mike Perez (Fairfax Station, VA.). Nick Walker (Virginia Beach, VA.) followed with a hit and both scored on a double down the left field line by Jason McMurray (Des Moines, IA.) to put ODU up 3-2. PJ Higgins (Wallingford, CT.) completed the scoring by singling home McMurray for a 4-2 lead.
Sophomore lefthander Jake Josephs pitched five scoreless innings allowing just one hit and striking out three. At one stretch, he retired 14 batters in a row before Colby Johnson’s two out single in the eighth. Nick Hartman came on in the ninth, and picked up his fourth save of the season.
Jason McMurray led the Monarchs with three hits and two RBI, while PJ Higgins, one of the top three hitters in C-USA at .357 had two hits tonight. Taylor Love and Taylor Nichols led LA Tech with two hits each.
The third and final game of the C-USA homestand is Sunday at 11 a.m.
