NORFOLK, Va. – Jermaine Woods has been named as an assistant coach to the Old Dominion women’s basketball staff, as announced today by head coach Karen Barefoot. Woods was the head coach at Maury High School in Norfolk, Va. for three seasons before spending the past two seasons as an assistant on the Virginia Tech women’s basketball staff.
“We are so pleased to announce the hiring of Jermaine Woods,” said Barefoot. “He is a great addition to the Lady Monarch staff. Jermaine is a go-getter and an outstanding recruiter. We welcome Jermaine and his family as they return home to Hampton Roads, where he has achieved success as a player, high school coach and AAU coach.”
Woods joined the Virginia Tech women’s basketball staff as an assistant coach in July 2013. He recently helped sign the Hokies most recent recruiting class, which is ranked No. 20 by ESPN HoopGurlz. Woods also helped lead the Hokies to two wins in the 2015 ACC Tournament for the first time in school history.
“I am excited to return to my hometown and have an opportunity to work at Old Dominion University,” exclaimed Woods. “As a child, I remember attending men and women’s basketball games at the Scope and Field House, now I get a chance to be a part of the ODU family. I am grateful and honored to be able to work beside one of the hardest working coaches in our profession, Karen Barefoot. I have known Karen for almost 15 years and her dedication and passion to build the Old Dominion women’s basketball program and help grow the game is unparalleled.”
Woods arrived at Virginia Tech after three seasons as a head coach at Maury High School, where he led the team to a 61-18 record and berths in the regional finals. Woods also coached the Boo Williams AAU 17U and the Under B Team, where 21 students-athletes earned scholarships in his three years as head coach.
“I look forward to continuing my relationships with the great high school and AAU coaches in the area, many I coached against during my time at Maury High School,” Woods added. “Again, I want to thank Coach Barefoot and the Old Dominion administration for this opportunity and I look forward to being a Monarch.”
Prior to his coaching days, Woods was a standout athlete at Christopher Newport University where he was a two-time first team All-Dixie Conference selection and earned the league’s Newcomer of the Year award. Woods set Christopher Newport’s three-point record as a junior and broke the record again as a senior in 2003. Woods also competed professionally in Poland. The Virginia native graduated from Norfolk State with a degree in business management in 2011.
Woods and his wife Natasha have three children, Jermaine, Nyjae and Kerrington.
