NORFOLK – Two Old Dominion University athletic programs, men’s golf and women’s soccer, have been recognized among the top 10 percent of all athletic programs achieving superior Academic Progress Rate marks today by the NCAA.

The men’s golf team had a multi-year score of 1000, while women’ soccer had a multi-year score of 997.

“The academic success of the two teams who have been recognized by the NCAA, and our overall program, is a direct result of the tremendous support our student athletes receive from our coaching staff, our faculty and academic advisors,” says ODU Director of Athletics Dr. Wood Selig.

“I am proud of the culture of academic excellence that continues to define ODU student athletes in general. I look forward to building on this success in the future,” Selig adds.

The latest APR data compiled the retention and eligibility rates for the 2010-11, 2011-12, 2012-13 and 2013-14 academic years. ODU’s previous high of teams with perfect scores in multi-year data was also two, with men’s tennis and women’s golf in 2012-13.

Each year, the NCAA honors selected Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR).  This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports.  Specifically, these teams posted multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport.

The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship.  The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.

Old Dominion had 140 (31%) student athletes earn Dean’s List honors in the Spring 2015 semester with GPA’s of 3.4 or higher, ODU led all Conference USA members this spring with 261 student athletes, representing all 18 sports, earning the Commissioner’s Honor Roll recognition with a 3.0 or higher, and 44 were recognized as Academic Medal recipients with GPA’s of a 3.75 or higher.

Additional information regarding the APR performance of all Division I members and individual teams will be released by the NCAA on May 27.  APR scores for the top 10 percent of NCAA programs can be accessed at the link below.
