ODU?s Comeback Falls Short Against Detroit in A-Sun Semifinals

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. –Old Dominion ended its season with a 13-5 overall record after falling to Detroit in the Atlantic Sun Tournament semifinals by a 14-11 score. The Monarchs concluded the year with a 13-5 overall record, tying the program’s mark for wins in a season.

Detroit came out strong, taking a 6-0 lead by the 15:44 mark. ODU never gave in and started chipping away at the deficit and came back within four goals by halftime. Connor Carson got ODU on the board first with a goal at the 12:52 mark off an assist by Ashmore Standing.

Jessica Liberty scored 52 second later (6-2) after she corralled her own rebound and with a diving effort sent the ball into the back of the net. The Titans scored two more goals to bring their lead back to six (8-2), but the Monarchs scored three of the last four goals from Carson, Liberty and Standing to go into the intermission down four (9-5).

The Monarchs came out of the locker room strong, scoring the first three goals of the second half to pull within one goal (9-8) with 28:25 on the clock. The two teams traded the next two goals, before Detroit went on a four-goal run to take a 14-9 lead with 6:35 left on the clock.

Old Dominion answered with two quick goals of their own in a span of 23 seconds to pull within three goals with 3:22 on the clock. Standing scored the first tally, while Christina Rea notched the second off a Carson assist. Detroit won the ensuing draw and held the ball for two minutes before turning the ball over. ODU had a chance to score in the final minute, but could not capitalize as the Monarchs fell to the Titans.

ODU led the Titans in draw controls (18-9) and ground balls (13-9), while Detroit recorded one more shot than the Monarchs (22-21).

Maggi Buckley started the game, playing 24:35 minutes and finished with one save. She completes the year with a 6-1 overall record. Karen Hayde played 35:25 minutes for the Monarchs and made two saves. She finished her senior season with a 7-4 overall record.

Liberty led the offense with four goals, while Standing chipped in three goals and an assist. Carson added two goals and two assists to go along with her two draw controls and two caused turnovers. Missy Koscinski led the back-line with three caused turnovers and four ground balls.

Annie Mendoza led the Titans with four goals and an assist, while Michaela Schwartz and Kylie Birney added three goals apiece. Lauren Webley aided in the defensive effort with a caused turnover, one ground ball and two draw controls.

Old Dominion closed out the season with a 13-5 overall record and a 6-1 mark in league play. The team tied the program record for wins in a season and also tied the mark for most goals in a game twice.
