NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion sophomore midfielder Connor Carson was named the Atlantic-Sun Player of the Week, as the league office announced on Tuesday morning. This marks Carson’s first weekly honor after being named an additional nominee twice.
Carson led the Monarchs to a 2-0 showing last weekend, to improve to 3-1 in the conference and 10-4 overall. The Monarchs took down Mercer, 24-10, tying the program record for goals in a game that was set in 1980. ODU followed that performance with a 19-4 win over Kennesaw State, holding the Owls scoreless for 33:55 of the contest.
The Charlottesville, Va. native notched five goals on seven shots to claim a .700 shots-on-goal percentage. She also added 12 draw controls, tying a season-high with seven against Mercer.
Defensively, she was also part of the unit that allowed just 14 goals in two games, including a second half shutout of Kennesaw State. The back line held Mercer to a .384 shooting percentage and forced the Bears into 22 turnovers. Against Kennesaw State, the defense held the Owls to 19 shots, including just one shot in the first 11 minutes of the second half.
The midfielder currently leads the team with 45 draw controls and 24 caused turnovers. Her caused turnovers also tops the conference standings and ranks 27th in the nation, while her 45 draws is good for second in the league. She also ranks second on the team with 29 ground balls.
Junior midfielder Morgan Gallagher was also named an additional nominee for the weekly A-Sun defensive honor. She posted six ground balls and four caused turnovers over the two games.
The Monarchs will be back in action this weekend, as they travel to Furman on Saturday, April 11 for a noon contest.
