NORFOLK, VA—The ODU Baseball Monarchs (16-13/5-7) pounded out a season high tying 17 hits while sophomore lefthander Adam Bainbridge (Sinking Spring, PA.) along with lefthander Jake Joseph’s (Fairfax Station, VA.) combined on a three-hitter to lead the Monarchs to a 15-1 Conference-USA victory over the Charlotte 49ers Sunday to take the second game of a three-game series. The contest ended in the seventh inning due to the C-USA 10-run rule on Sunday get-a-way day.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the second, ODU scored 17 runs in four of the next five innings. In the four-run second, junior thirdbaseman PJ Higgins (Wallingford, CT.) singled in two runs and in the Monarchs seven-run sixth inning freshman Zach Rutherford (Virginia Beach, VA.) singled home two runs and junior centerfielder Connor Myers (Middletown, MD.) doubled in two more.
Zach Rutherford, Connor Myers and junior Jason McMurray (Des Moines, IA.) each knocked in three runs, while Rutherford, Myers, McMurray and senior Josh Eldridge (Lorton, VA.) had three hits each. Senior catcher Mike Perez (Fairfax Station, VA.) and Eldridge scored three times each today.
Logan Sherer led Charlotte with two hits and knocked in the 49ers only run in the top of the first inning.
ODU had 17 hits in the 14-5 win over then No. 1 Virginia on March 11 in Charlottesville.
ODU hosts Liberty Monday night at 6 p.m. in a game that was postponed back on Feb. 24th because of bad weather.
