NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion University women’s basketball team signed Rhaven Kemp (Jackson, Tenn), who is a 5-foot-6 sophomore point guard transferring from Eastern Florida State junior college, head coach Karen Barefoot announced on Monday afternoon.
“She’s a good athlete who did whatever she was asked to help her team win,” said ODU assistant coach Jim Corrigan.
Last season as a sophomore, Kemp proved her versatility by playing four different positions and helping the Titans to 22 wins, while the team advanced to the junior college regional playoffs for the first time in 10 years. Kemp was named to the All-Tournament team in the 2015 NJCAA Region 8 Tournament.
Two seasons ago as a freshman, Kemp started all but one game she appeared in during and averaged 9.4 ppg, while leading the team in steals.
In high school, Kemp was a state tournament semi-finalist, All State Second Team, Team MVP, Team Offensive Player of the Year. She also became Liberty High School’s all time assist leader (571). Her senior year, she led the team in points (12.6 ppg), steals (2.8 spg) and assists (5.2 apg).
Eastern Florida State College head basketball coach, Jim Grimes said, "Rhaven was a huge part of turning the program around and helping us win the Southern Conference Championship. She will be missed greatly, but I know that she is moving on to a great program in Old Dominion. I could not be more proud of Rhaven and am thankful that her hard work is paying off with the opportunity to become a Lady Monarch."
