NORFOLK, VA—Old Dominion University (18-21/6-12) sophomore lefthander Adam Bainbridge (Sinking Spring, PA.) tossed a complete game three-hitter to lead the Monarchs to a 6-2 Conference USA victory over Marshall Sunday afternoon, ending ODU’s four-game losing streak.
Bainbridge gave up the two runs and three hits in the first inning and only allowed one batter to reach base the rest of the way.
Bainbridge retired 19 straight batters before he hit Tyler Ratliff with two outs in the seventh inning. He then retired the final seven batters for his first complete collegiate game. Bainbridge fanned six with no walks for his third straight win. He now has a 2.36 ERA overall and 1.88 in C-USA games.
ODU Sophomore Nick Walker (Virginia Beach, VA.) had a career best four-for-four day with three RBI, including his team best fifth home run of the season, a two-run shot in the seventh inning with Jason McMurray (Des Moines, IA.) aboard. Walker had two doubles, a single and a homer on the day.
After Marshall took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, ODU scored when Connor Myers (Middletown, MD.) doubled home Taylor Ostrich (Carroll, IA.). ODU took the lead for good in the third on a two-run double by Mike Perez (Fairfax Station, VA.) which plated Zach Rutherford (Chesapeake, VA.) and Ostrich. The Monarchs added a run in the fifth as Walker doubled home Josh Eldridge (Lorton, VA.).
ODU hosts Richmond Wednesday night at 6 p.m. at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex. The contest will be broadcast live on STAR1310 AM.
