NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion women’s lacrosse defeated Detroit Mercy 16-9 Saturday afternoon on senior day. The Monarchs took control of the game when they scored their third goal of the day with 10:49 remaining in the first and would never relinquish the lead.
Detroit Mercy earned the first marker just 4:22 into the game on a goal from Annie Mendoza from a Tessa Keuler pass. Jessica Liberty tied the game with her only goal of the day off of a Conner Carson pass at 22:16 remaining in the first half. Detroit Mercy scored their second point of the game on a Kelsi Pritchard goal from Julie Castner to lead 2-1 with 14:32 to go.
The Monarchs would then go on an 8-1 run to close out the half 9-3. Carson, Christina Rea, Cydney Tutchton, Ashmore Standing, Megan Topper and Morgan Marrale would all contribute to the lead at halftime.
Detroit Mercy would open up the second half with their fourth goal of the game at 24:51 on a Jordyn Beam unassisted shot. Standing and Carson would score three goals before UDM would go on a 5-1 run ending with their ninth goal on the day with 9:06 remaining. ODU closed out the game with three goals, the last coming from Rea with just six seconds remaining to bring the final tally to 16-9.
Old Dominion controlled the shot charts with 35-26 shots and would lead UDM in draw controls 17-9. Eight different Monarchs and six different Titans scored. Detroit Mercy controlled the stats in ground balls (22-15), clear attempts (17-13) and free-position shots (8-3).
Maggi Buckley picked up her fifth win in goal for the Monarchs and Lexi McCormick fell to 6-7 for the Titans. Buckley finished the game with eight saves, while McCormick recorded 11 during her time between the pipes.
Standing led the offense with six goals and two assists to total eight points on the day. Carson chipped in with three goals and one assist to go along with her four draw controls. Missy Koscinski recorded two caused turnovers and two ground balls to lead the defense.
Mendoza led the Titans with three goals and three draw controls, while Keuler added two goals and two assists. McCormick led the team with nine ground balls and two caused turnovers.
The Monarchs will return to action on April 25 when they travel to Howard for their last regular season tune-up before the A-Sun Tournament.
