Higgins & Bainbridge Lead ODU Over UTSA, 11-2

SAN ANTONIO, TX--  P.J. Higgins (Wallingford, CT.) belted two homers and sophomore lefthander Adam Bainbridge (Sinking Spring, PA.) allowed just two runs as Old Dominion (17-17/5-10) defeated UTSA (21-15/9-6), 11-2 in the third and final game of the series at Roadrunner Field.  The loss ended the Monarchs three-game losing streak.

The Monarchs got on the board first when Higgins blasted his second homer of the season to lead-off the contest.  In the second inning Higgins belted another homer with senior Josh Eldridge (Lorton, VA.) aboard for a 5-0 ODU lead.  Senior Taylor Ostrich (Carroll, IA.) hit a two-run shot with Zach Rutherford (Chesapeake, VA.) aboard in the fifth. Ostrich is now tied with Nick Walker (Virginia Beach, VA.) for the team lead with four homers.

Higgins, who is batting .383 finished the day with three hits in three at bats, and three RBI. For the three-game series, Higgins hit .500 with a .944 slugging percentage. He now has an 11-game hitting streak and has reached base in 18 straight games.

Bainbridge (2-1) pitched seven innings, allowing just five hits, two runs with one walk and five strikeouts. Thomas Busbice (Omaha,NE.) pitched the final two innings with two strikeouts and no runs allowed.

Joining Higgins with three hits on the day was Connor Myers, while Zach Rutherford, Josh Eldridge, Jason Murray (Des Moines, IA.) and Nick Walker each had two hits. The Monarchs pounded out 15 on the day.

ODU returns to action Tuesday night in Williamsburg against William & Mary at 7 p.m., then return home to play East Carolina Wednesday at 4 p.m.
