The win snapped a three-match winning streak for the Owls

NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion men’s tennis, ranked No. 68 nationally, defeated Florida Atlantic 5-1 Friday evening at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center. With the win, the Monarchs improve to 9-1 on the season, including 3-0 in Conference USA play.

No. 87 Carlos Lopez Villa and Javier Jover Maestre started off the match with an 8-3 No. 2 doubles victory over the Owls’ (7-7) Sean Bacha and Stefan Burnett. Adam Moundir and Michael Weindl followed with an 8-4 No. 1 decision over Andrei Morin-Kougoucheff and Will Neuner to earn ODU the doubles point. The pair have been victorious in seven of their ten matches together. ODU’s Zvonimir Podvinski and Theophile Lanthiez led the No. 3 doubles match with FAU’s Richard Meade and Zandrix Acob 7-4 but did not finish.

In singles action, Jover Maestre earned a 6-0, 6-2 decision against Meade at the No. 4 spot.

At No. 6, Podvinski downed Burnett in straight sets 6-0, 6-1. The junior from Zagreb, Croatia is now 9-1 in singles play.

Moundir bested Neuner in No. 2 singles with a score of 6-1, 6-4 and improves to 7-3 on the season.

Weindl earned the final point for the Monarchs with a 6-3, 7-5 effort against Bacha. The freshman from Neuching, Germany has won eight of his last nine matches.

Lopez Villa, ranked No. 87 nationally, and Morin-Kougoucheff did not finish their No. 1 singles match. The senior from Madrid, Spain led 7-6 and remains 9-0 this season and 47-2 throughout the past three seasons.
