MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The No. 61 Old Dominion men’s tennis team (12-2) had its five match winning streak snapped by South Alabama (11-7) in the Championship match of the 2015 Middle Tennessee Shootout by a score of 4-2.
The Tennis Monarchs arrived to Sunday’s championship match after taking down Binghamton (6-1) in the first round, before handling host Middle Tennessee (4-0) in the semifinals.
The Jaguars started the day claiming the doubles point and taking an early 1-0 lead.
Javier Jover Maestre tied the team score at 1-1, after making quick work of Manuel Belda (6-2, 6-4). Jover Maestre has now five consecutive matches.
Michael Weindl gave Old Dominion and 2-1 lead when he finished next with a victory over Tuki Jacobs on Court No. 3 (6-2, 6-4). Weindl is currently on a six-match winning-streak.
However, South Alabama would win the remaining three singles matches to claim a 4-2 win over the Monarchs in the MT Shootout Championship.
No. 102 ranked Carlos Lopez Villa lost just his first match of the season in a tight three-setter to USA’s Daniel Leitner (2-6, 6-2, 6-1). Lopez Villa is now 12-1 on the season and is 50-3 throughout the past three seasons.

Old Dominion will get a chance to avenge this loss on Friday, March 3, at 3:00 p.m. when the Monarchs host South Alabama at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center. Then on Sunday at 10:00 a.m., ODU will welcome UAB to the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
