MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Old Dominion University men’s tennis team (12-1) won its semifinal match against tournament host and Conference USA foe Middle Tennessee (10-9) on Saturday afternoon by a score of 4-0 in the 2015 Middle Tennessee Shootout in Murfreesboro, Tenn. The Tennis Monarchs have now won five in a row and are 8-1 when playing away from the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
Old Dominion will play in tomorrow’s championship match against the winner of Southern Miss versus South Alabama. Sunday’s championship match will take place at 10:00 a.m.
The Tennis Monarchs started Saturday afternoon claiming the doubles point after pair’s Michael Weindl/Adam Moundir and Carlos Lopez Villa/Javier Jover Maestre handled business in their matches.
No. 102 ranked Carlos Lopez Villa made quick work of MT’s Ettore Zito (6-3, 6-4), moving the senior from Madrid, Spain to a perfect 12-0 mark this year. Lopez Villa is an impressive 50-2 throughout the past three seasons, dating back to his sophomore year. The six-foot four-inch right-hander has won 10 of his 12 matches in straight sets.
Michael Weindl has won four of his last five matches, after defeating Yannick Born (6-3, 6-3).
Javier Jover Maestre won his fourth consecutive match when he beat Gian Issa (6-3, 3-6, 6-2).
