ODU Wins 4th Straight After 6-1 Win vs. Binghamton in MT Shootout

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Old Dominion University men’s tennis team (11-1) won its First Round match against Binghamton (2-12) on Friday afternoon by a score of 6-1 in the 2015 Middle Tennessee Shootout in Murfreesboro, Tenn. The Tennis Monarchs have now won four in a row and are 7-1 when playing away from the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.

Old Dominion will take on the winner of the Middle Tennessee versus Illinois State match. MT and ISU are set to play at 2:00 p.m. today, while ODU will take on the winner Saturday, March 28 at 2:00 p.m. in the Semifinals.

ODU started the day off by claiming the doubles point, after tandems Moundir/Weindl and Lanthiez/Podvinski handled business on Friday. Moundir/Weindl have now won four in a row advance their record together to 9-3 on the season.

No. 102 ranked Carlos Lopez Villa made quick work of Binghamton’s Sid Hazarika (6-3, 6-4), moving the senior from Madrid, Spain to a perfect 11-0 mark this year. Lopez Villa is an impressive 49-2 throughout the past three seasons, dating back to his sophomore year. The six-foot four-inch right-hander has won nine of his 11 matches in straight sets.

Freshman Adam Moundir took care of BU’s Ismael Dinia in straight sets (6-2, 7-6(7)). Moundir has now won four consecutive matches.

Michael Weindl had his three-match winning-streak snapped by Eliott Hureau (7-6(1), 6-4).

Javier Jover Maestre was too much for Frank Kote (6-4, 6-3), and has now won three straight matches.

Theophile Lanthiez advances his overall record to 6-6 after taking down Doug Notaris (7-6(6), 6-1). Lanthiez has now won two matches in a row and claimed victory in three of his last four matches.

Zvonimir Podvinski also picked up a win for Aljosa Piric’s Tennis Monarchs, as he handled Vihar Shah (6-3, 6-0). Podvinski is 11-1 for the season and currently has a six-match winning streak in tact. His last loss came on Feb. 13, 2015.
