NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion midfielder Morgan Gallagher was named the Atlantic-Sun Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday. This marks Gallagher’s first weekly honor of the season after being named an additional nominee for the weekly award twice.
Gallagher earned her first weekly honor after coming up big in Old Dominion’s lone game of the week. She helped guide the Monarchs to a 7-6 victory over American with a team-leading three caused turnovers and four ground balls. He defensive efforts helped the back line hold the Eagles to just a .285 shooting percentage on the day.
The junior captain has posted 16 caused turnovers so far this season, which is not only good for third on the team, but it marks the fourth best number in the conference. Gallagher also leads the team with 22 ground balls and ranks fifth in league in that category.
Jessica Liberty was also named an additional nominee for the Player of the Week award. She led the Monarchs’ offense with four goals, including the game winner with less than two minutes to play in the win over American.
The Monarchs are now 7-3 on the season and return to the field on Friday, March 27, for a 7:00 p.m. contest at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex against conference foe Jacksonville.
