The Old Dominion University women’s rowing team will host it’s only home regatta of the season on Saturday, March 21, and also start a new tradition that honors ODU President John R. Broderick and First Lady Kate Broderick.

When the Lady Monarchs take to the waters of the Lafayette River on Saturday morning against the University of North Carolina, the Varsity 8 boat will bear the name of John R. Broderick, while Kate’s name will grace the bow of the second Varsity 8 boat.

The regatta features five races, including the Novice 8’s at 8 a.m., Varsity 8 at 8:15, the second Varsity 8 race at 8:30, Varsity 4 at 8:45, and second Novice 8 at 9 a.m., followed by the Varsity 4 Open at 9:15 a.m. The best viewing for fans is on the Granby Street Bridge, and also along Mayflower Avenue in the Colonial Place section of Norfolk.

Following the races at 10:30 a.m. at the ODU Intercollegiate Rowing Center in Lakewood Park, the University will honor 14 senior rowers, and then officially christen the two Broderick boats.  The boats will be used consistently in the future by the two varsity 8 squads.
