CHARLESTON, S.C. – No. 56 Old Dominion won every possible match on Wednesday afternoon in its 7-0 rout against James Madison in a neutral-court match at Charleston Tennis Center in Charleston, S.C. The Tennis Monarchs (3-0 C-USA) advance their record to 10-1 for the season. The Dukes fall to 4-7 overall (1-1 CAA).
Impressively, Old Dominion won every singles match in straight sets. This week, the Tennis Monarchs jumped 12 spots to No. 56 in the most recent ITA Rankings.
ODU swept all three doubles matches to take the doubles point. Adam Moundir and Michael Weindl defeated sophomores Miljan Ruzic and Sebastian Salinas 8-3 at No. 1 doubles while juniors Maxi Branth and Rob Stirling dropped an 8-5 decision to Carlos Lopez Villa and Javier Jover Maestre at No. 2 doubles. Sophomores Alex Berdnikoff and Brett Moorhead fell 8-2 to Theophile Lanthiez and Zvonimir Podvinski at the No. 3 position.
No. 108 Carlos Lopez Villa was too much for Salinas 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, and while Moundir took down Stirling in straight 6-1 sets at No. 2 singles to Moundir. Weindl defeated Branth 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 singles, while Jover Maestre won 6-4, 6-1 over Ruzic at No. 4 singles.
At No. 5 singles, ODU freshman Lanthiez handled James Madison’s Moorhead (6-2, 7-5). Podvinski followed suit, taking care of JMU’s freshman Stephen Goldman 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.
Old Dominion's David Botti and Sam Perelman also picked up singles wins, as they took straight set victories in two exhibition matches for ODU.
NEXT UP FOR THE TENNIS MONARCHS
Old Dominion will have a week off before traveling to Wilmington on March 20 at 2:00 p.m. to make a previously postponed match against UNCW.
