ODU Records Best Start Since 2009 With 12-8 Win Over UC Davis

DAVIS, Calif. – The Old Dominion women’s lacrosse team earned their second win in California after defeating UC Davis, 12-8, on Tuesday afternoon at Aggie Stadium.

The Monarchs improved to 6-2 overall, which marks the best start to a season since ODU went 6-2 in 2009. The Aggies fell to 1-4 on the year with the loss to Old Dominion.

Ashmore Standing and Jessica Liberty gave ODU a 2-0 lead to start the game after the duo scored within the first five minute of play. UC Davis answered with three goals of their own to take a 3-2 lead with 19:05 left to play in the first half. Elizabeth Landry led the attack with two goals that were both assisted by Melissa Kellan.

Colby Muller scored her first goal of the season two minutes later off an assist from Liberty and Christina Rea gave the lead back to the Monarchs with a tally with 14:38 on the clock. The Aggies closed the first half with a 3-1 run to hold a slight 6-5 lead at the intermission.

ODU never gave up and opened the second half strong. The Monarchs opened with three goals from Tutchton, Standing and Liberty to take a two-goal lead (8-6) just over five minutes into the final period.

UC Davis would get two goals from Courtney Neff and Landry, but the Monarchs secured the win with four goals in the final 15 minutes. Tutchton and Liberty led the way with two goals apiece, while Standing assisted two of those markers.

ODU led in shots with a 19-17 margin, while also holding a 20-19 edge in ground balls. UC Davis won the draw battle with a 13-8 edge.

Karen Hayde picked up her sixth win of the season after she stopped eight shots for a .500 percentage in 60 minutes of action. Kai Murphy suffered the loss in goal for the Aggies, finishing with four saves.

Liberty led the Monarchs’ offense with four goals and two assists, while Standing added three goals and two assists of her own. Tutchton chipped in three goals on three shots as well. Connor Carson paced the defense with three caused turnovers and four ground balls to go along with her three draw controls.

Landry led the Aggies’ offense with five goals and four draw controls. Neff chipped in with two goals, while Murphy recorded a team-high two caused turnovers and two ground balls.

The Monarchs will be back in action on Sunday, March 15 when they host William & Mary at 1:00 p.m. at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.
