NORFOLK, Va. – Coming off an impressive 7-0 sweep over No. 60 Elon on Saturday, the Old Dominion men’s tennis team wrapped up the weekend taking down the University of Richmond (1-3) by a score of 6-1 on Sunday at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center to remain a perfect 5-0 on the season.
The Monarchs started the afternoon with a pair of doubles wins to claim the match’s first point. Adam Moundir and Michael Weindl won their No. 1 match against Richmond’s Ethan and Jacob Dunbar, 6-4. Carlos Lopez Villa and Theophile Lanthiez, playing in the No. 2 spot, finished soon after with a 6-3 decision against James Aronson and Canyon Teague. The No. 3 match went unfinished, as Zvonimir Podvinski and Javier Jover Maestre were up 5-4 over Dylan Trent and Jon Quenard.
In singles action, Lanthiez was the first to finish as he won 6-3, 6-2 over Caleb Troy at the No. 4 spot. Weindl finished next with a 6-4, 6-1 No. 3 victory against Teague.
At No. 6, Podvinski downed Trent by a score of 6-3, 6-1. Jover Maestre then followed with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Quenard in No. 5 singles.
Lopez Villa, ranked No. 42 and playing at No. 1, earned the final point for Old Dominion. The senior from Madrid, Spain battled back after losing the first set 2-6 to defeat Ethan Dunbar 6-2, 10-7. Lopez is now 5-0 this season and is 43-2 over the last three seasons.
