CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Old Dominion University women’s basketball team (13-8, 6-4) had its three game winning streak snapped after falling to Charlotte (9-13, 5-5) by a score of 82-67 on Saturday night at Halton Arena in Charlotte, N.C.
Tiffany Minor led the Lady Monarchs with 14 points to compliment five rebounds. Also in double figures for Old Dominion were Jennie Simms (13 points and four rebounds) and Destinee Young (11 points and eight rebounds).
A Tiffany Minor layup with 3:57 to play in the opening 20 minutes of action brought the Lady Monarchs within one point, 28-29, before the 49ers closed the first half on a 10-2 run, claiming a 39-30 advantage heading into the locker rooms.
Destinee Young led the way for ODU in the first half with seven points to go along with three rebounds in just nine minutes of work. Tiffany Minor drilled two three’s to net six first half points. Charlotte’s Kira Gordon led all first half scorers with 10 points, while teammate Olivia Rankin followed with nine points. Jennie Simms on was benched with two early fouls, having to sit out the remaining 12:27 of the first half.
Old Dominion connected on 9-26 (34.6%) of its field-goal attempts, 3-7 (42.9%) from three and all 9-9 from the charity stripe. The 49ers shot 51.7% (15-29) from the floor in the first half, 33.3% (2-6) from deep and 70% (7-10) from the free-throw line.
Charlotte started the second half on a 17-6 run over a 4:06 period, lifting the 49ers to a 56-36 advantage and forcing an Old Dominion timeout with 15:54 remaining in regulation. By the last media timeout of the ballgame, ODU trailed Charlotte 78-59 with 3:45 to play in the contest before the 49ers claimed an 82-67 victory on Saturday night at Halton Arena.
Charlotte’s Ayanna Holmes led all scorers with 18 points, to go along with eight assists and five rebounds. Lefty Webster followed with 17 points, six assists and five rebounds. Kira Gordon netted 16 boards and grabbed seven rebounds, while Hillary Sigmon scored 13 points.
In a ballgame which experienced seven ties, ODU held a 16-8 advantage on second chance points, while the 49ers held advantages in points in the paint (40-20) and points off turnovers (31-11).
For the contest, Old Dominion shot 40% (22-55) from the floor, 41.2% (7-17) from three and 84.2% (16-19) from the free-throw line. Charlotte connected on 50% (32-64) from the floor, 38.5% (5-13) from deep and 68.4% (13-19) from the charity stripe.

Old Dominion will return home this week to take on UTSA on Thursday, Feb. 12 at 7:00 p.m., before hosting UTEP on Sat., Feb. 14 for the annual HOOPS FOR A CURE ballgame at 2:00 p.m.
