3-0 Monarchs Hosts No. 66 Elon (Sat. PIZZA GIVEAWAY) & U of R (Sun.)

NORFOLK, Va. – The undefeated Old Dominion University men’s tennis team (3-0) hosts its first two matches of the 2015 spring season this weekend, when the Tennis Monarchs welcome No. 66 Elon (0-4) on Sat. Feb. 7 (1:00 p.m.) and Richmond on Sun. Feb. 8 (1:00 p.m.) to the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center. On Saturday, there will be a PIZZA GIVEAWAY for the first 100 fans, and then on Sunday, T-Shirts will be raffled off throughout the match!

Old Dominion enters the weekend with a perfect 3-0 overall record after beating Navy (6-1), UTSA (5-2) and No. 75 nationally ranked Rice (5-2). ODU’s only senior, Carlos Lopez Villa, is ranked No. 42 and has yet to lose a match this season. In fact, over the past three seasons, Lopez Villa has combined for a 41-2 overall record in singles play.

The Tennis Monarchs have received brilliant play from a cast of others already this season, Adam Moundir, Zvonimir Podvinski and Michael Weindl are all 3-0, respectively. True freshman Javier Jover Maestre is 2-0 and was leading his third match, which came to an unfinished halt.

No. 66 Elon is 0-4 this season, but all four losses came against top 60 ranked schools: No. 17 Tennessee (2-5), No. 29 South Carolina (2-5), No. 55 Michigan State and No. 60 Utah (3-4).

The University of Richmond enters the weekend with a 1-2 overall mark after a 5-0 victory against Navy and losses versus Belmont (3-2) and Delaware (5-0). The Spiders were predicted to finish fourth in the Atlantic 10 this season. Old Dominion head coach, Aljosa Piric, graduated from U of R in 2000 with a bachelor's degree in business management. As a member of the Spider's tennis team, Piric played at No. 1 singles and doubles and served as team captain his senior season.
