NORFOLK, Va. - Saturday afternoon at the Ted Constant Convocation marked Senior Day for Tiffany Minor and Chelisa Painter, in a game that the Lady Monarchs (17-10, 10-6) led in its entirety, claiming a 70-48 victory over North Texas (5-22, 4-12). The Lady Monarchs held NT to just 25.4% shooting from the floor for the ballgame. ODU has now won three games in a row.
Jennie Simms led the way for the Lady Monarchs, recording her ninth double-double of the season, with four of those performances coming in the last five contests. Simms finished with 20 points (3-4 3PT), 14 rebounds (ties career high), six assists and three steals.
Ashley Betz-White chipped in 12 points (4-6 FG, 2-3 3PT), while Chelisa Painter also finished in double figures, netting 11 points. Destinee Young filled up the stat sheet going for nine points, five rebounds, five blocks (ties career high) and four assists.
A Tiffany Minor made three-pointer extended Old Dominion’s lead to 18-5 with 11:07 remaining in the first half. By the under-four media timeout at the 3:31 mark, Old Dominion stretched its advantage to 18 (33-15).
The Lady Monarchs doubled North Texas’ score by halftime, taking a 42-21 lead into the locker rooms behind 13 points and eight rebounds from Simms. Ashley Betz-White followed with 12 points on 4-5 shooting from the floor and 2-3 from deep.
Tiffany Minor (six rebounds) and Destinee Young each chipped in six points, respectively. For the half, Old Dominion connected on 53.3% (16-30) of its shots from the floor and 53.8% (7-13) from behind the arc. This was the third consecutive ballgame in which the Lady Monarchs scored 40 or more points in the first half.
With 14:29 remaining in the second half, each team had scored seven points bringing the score to 49-28 in favor of the Lady Monarchs. By the under-eight media timeout at the 7:49 mark, Old Dominion led 57-31 and held a 20-6 advantage for points in the paint.
ODU led 67-42 at the last media timeout with 3:45 to play in the ballgame, before claiming the 70-48 victory over the Mean Green on Saturday afternoon at the Ted.
North Texas was led by Eboniey Jeter’s 12 points and 13 rebounds, while Candice Adams followed with 10 points and six boards.
For the game, Old Dominion shot 48.3% (28-58) from the floor, 42.1% (8-19) from three and 40% (6-15) from the charity stripe. The Mean Green shot 25.4% (16-63) from the floor, 35.7% (5-14) from deep and 61.1% (11-18) from the free-throw line.
Minor and Painter Honored on Senior Day
Tiffany Minor
Minor, a six-foot senior forward from Upper Marlboro, Maryland was accompanied by are her parents: Charles and Stephanie Minor; sister: Taneya; and brother: Justin.
Astonishingly, Tiffany has appeared in all 124 possible games throughout the past four seasons in a Lady Monarch uniform.
She is currently second on the team in scoring, steals, assists, minutes played and made field goals. Minor also leads Old Dominion in made three-pointers this season. Last season against Duke at Cameron Indoor, Minor poured in a career of 20 points. For her career, Tiffany has scored 751 points and hauled down 468 rebounds.
Tiffany has been a Dean’s List recipient five times throughout her collegiate career and was named to the 2014 C-USA Academic Honor Roll. Minor possesses a 3.48 cumulative GPA as a recreation/tourism studies major with a Therapeutic Recreation concentration and a psychology minor.
Chelisa Painter
Painter, a six-foot one-inch redshirt senior forward from Chesapeake, Virginia was accompanied by her mother: Quinnetta Pierce; father: Lynn Painter; sister: Daneda Simon; and godfather: LaSalle Knight.
‘LeeLee’ transferred to Old Dominion after playing her first two seasons at George Washington. Last season as a redshirt junior, ‘LeeLee’ was second on the team for points, rebounds and blocks.
Throughout the past two seasons, she has posted 22 double-digit performances, as well as four double-doubles. On Thursday against Rice, ‘LeeLee’ had a career day on the hardwood, setting career highs for points with 25, assists with six and steals with four.
Chelisa is currently interning with the department of juvenile justice and will leave Old Dominion University with a degree in Sociology.
