MYRTLE BEACH, SC – ODU sophomore rightfielder Nick Walker (Virginia Beach, VA.) knocked in two runs and four Monarch pitchers combined on a two-hitter to lead ODU (1-3) to a 3-0 victory over Rutgers Friday evening at the Cal Ripken Complex. The three-game series was moved due to the snow storm here in Hampton Roads.
Walker put the Monarchs on the board in the second with a solo home run, his first of the season. In the seventh senior catcher Mike Perez (Fairfax Station, VA.) led off with a single and came home on junior centerfielder Connor Myers (Middletown, MD.) RBI single. ODU’s third and final run came in the eighth as junior second baseman PJ Higgins (Wallingford, CT.) led off with a double and came home on a sacrifice fly by Nick Walker.
Senior righthander Greg Tomchick (Virginia Beach, VA.) pitched five scoreless innings, walking two and fanning a career high eight batters. Sophomore righthander Sam Sinnen (Virginia Beach, VA.), sophomore lefthander Adam Bainbridge (Sinking Spring, PA.) and junior righthander Thomas Busbice (Omaha, NE.) pitched the final four innings of shutout ball to preserve the win with Busbice picking up his first save as a Monarch.
Vinny Zarrillo and Christian Campbell were the only Scarlet Knights to get hits for Rutgers. The two teams will play at 7:30 Saturday night.
