No. 59 Ranked ODU (7-0) Faces No. 58 Cornell (Fri.) & Binghamton (Sun.)

Ithaca, N.Y. - The undefeated and nationally ranked No. 59 Old Dominion Tennis Monarchs (7-0) will travel for a showdown with the Ivy League’s No. 58 Cornell (4-5) on Friday, Feb. 27, at 6:00 p.m. at the Reis Tennis Center in Ithica, New York. ODU will be seeking its third win in as many tries against a nationally ranked opponent. Old Dominion will then take on Binghamton on Sunday, March 1, in Ithaca, N.Y.

This week, the Tennis Monarchs jumped a total of nine spots in the updated ITA Rankings (prev. No. 68).

As a team, Old Dominion has bettered: Navy (6-1), UTSA (5-2), No. 75 Rice (4-2), No. 60 Elon (7-0), Richmond (6-1), East Carolina (5-2) and Yale (6-1). The Monarchs are 4-0 away from home and 3-0 when playing at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center. The team sits alone at the top of the Conference USA standings.

Individually, No. 87 nationally ranked Carlos Lopez Villa has won all seven of his matches at the No. 1 slot for Aljosa Piric’s red-hot team. Also an impressive 7-0 for ODU so far this season, is freshman Michael Weindl (No. 3). Another ODU freshman, Javier Jover Maestre (No. 5), is also unbeaten in singles play (6-0). Zvonimir Podvinski (No. 6) is 6-1, while Adam Moundir (No. 2) has lost only two of his seven matches, respectively.

In doubles play, Jover Maetsre and Podvinski have claimed victory in five of their six matches, while Moundir and Weindl are currently 5-2 when teaming up together.

Cornell is led by Chris Vrabel (5-2) and Colin Sinclair (5-3), who have compiled five wins a piece in singles action. Sinclair and teammate Sam Fleck are a perfect 5-0 in doubles play for the Big Red. The Big Red is coming off a big win against then-No. 27 Penn State by a 4-3 score.

Binghamton enters the weekend with a 2-6 overall record and is coming off a 5-2 loss at No. 61 Brown. The Bearcats will look to snap their current six-match skid.

The match scheduled for Friday, Feb. 20 against Charlotte was been cancelled due to inclement weather and adverse travel conditions.
