NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion University football wide receivers coach Zohn Burden was hired to the same position by Virginia Tech, Virginia Tech Head Coach Frank Beamer announced on Monday.
“We appreciate the efforts of Coach Burden with our football program. Zohn helped start our program back in 2007 as one of the original staff members,” ODU Head Coach Bobby Wilder said. “He recruited and developed some outstanding student-athletes for our team. We all wish him well with his new job.”
Burden was an original member of the ODU staff, coaching defensive backs until 2010. Burden left to coach the wide receivers at Richmond in 2011, but returned in 2012 to lead the Monarch receivers.
In 2014, he guided Antonio Vaughan to First-Team All-Conference USA honors after Vaughan led the league with 1,019 receiving yards. Zach Pascal earned honorable mention All-League honors and quarterback turned wide receiver David Washington caught 47 passes for 599 yards.
In 2013, ODU was one of just six FBS schools to have four players record 40 or more catches.
In the CAA Championship winning season of 2012, Burden helped Nick Mayers garner All-America honors after catching 79 passes for 1,223 yards and 16 touchdowns. Mayers and Vaughan also earned All-Conference accolades.
“I want to thank ODU President John Broderick, Athletic Director Wood Selig and Coach Wilder for the opportunities they gave me here at Old Dominion,” Burden said. “I’d be remiss if I didn’t also thank the student-athletes and coaches with whom I’ve worked closely, in addition to the community and fans that have supported us. I will be forever grateful for what we have been able to accomplish here.”
