GREENVILLE, N.C. – The Old Dominion men’s tennis team (6-0) remains undefeated after taking down East Carolina (3-6) by a score of 5-2 on Friday at the ECU Indoor Center. Old Dominion’s No. 66 Carlos Lopez Villa, Michael Weindl and Javier Jover Maestre also remain undefeated in singles play after picking up victories today.
"All credit to ECU today; they kept fighting and pushed us until the end,” explained ODU head coach Aljosa Piric. “We need to keep improving as a team. We can certainly take some confidence from our recent matches, but we have to stay humble, play hungry, and continue to improve as a team. We still have a lot of work ahead of us.”
Old Dominion started the day off by winning the doubles point behind victories from Adam Moundir/Michael Weindl and Zvonimir Podvinski/Javier Jover Maestre.
No. 66 Carlos Lopez Villa was the first to finish in single’s play, making quick work of East Carolina’s Nicolas Soriano (6-3, 6-0). Lopez Villa is now 6-0 on the season.
Michael Weindl continued his unbeaten streak, as he is now 5-0, after beating Tendai Tapfuma (ECU) 7-5, 6-1. Weindl’s teammate, Javier Jover Maestre took care of business in three sets (6-1, 2-6, 6-0), giving Maestre his fifth win in as many tries on the season.
Also picking up wins for Aljosa Piric’s Tennis Monarchs was freshman Theophile Lanthiez, who defeated Fredric Lehfeldt (ECU) 7-5, 5-7, 10-4.
