FAYETTVILLE, Ark. – The Lady Tennis Monarchs (2-1) lost an extremely tight match, 4-3, against No. 41 nationally ranked Arkansas (6-1) before shutting down Oral Roberts (1-3) by a score of 4-0 on Friday at the Billingsley Tennis Center.
“We are disappointed with the outcome today in the singles,” explained ODU head coach Dom Manilla. “We had the team victory on our racquets and let it slip away at key positions. We will take the hard lesson that a loss provides and continue to develop and grow as a team so that these matches will fall our way in the future.”
Manilla continued, “I tip my hat to Nikol Hristova and her victories today. She is such an important part of the top half of our lineup and today she proved it in singles and doubles. She is a dynamic leader of our team and someone that our younger players can learn from.”
Against No. 41 Arkansas, Old Dominion started the day by winning the double’s point after key victories from Nikol Hristova/Borislava Botusharova and Ingrid Vojcinakova/Marijana Novakovic.
Nikol Hristova got the nod in the No. 1 slot and made the most of it by taking down Arkansas’ Yang Pang in straight sets (6-4, 6-2). ODU’s sophomore Marijana Novakovic proved resilient against Sasha Shkorupeieva (ARK) in a match that went three sets (6-4, 3-6, 6-1) on Court No. 5. The Razorbacks would claim victory in the remaining four singles matches to escape with a 4-3 win on Friday afternoon.
Against Oral Roberts, the Lady Monarchs made quick work of Golden Eagles after claiming the doubles point. ODU’s tandem of Adriana Rajkovic and Ivana Vukovic won their match 6-4, while the sophomore duo of Ingrid Vojcinakova and Marijana Novakovic claimed a 6-2 doubles victory.
In singles against Oral Roberts, Borislava Botusharova (ODU) was too much for Andrada Gordon (OR) (6-0, 6-0) on Court No. 1. Ingrid Vojcinakova (ODU) defeated Peyta Simeonova (OR) in straight sets (6-0, 6-0). Marijana Novakovic (ODU) took down Oral Robert’s Ximena Puentes (OR) 6-0, 6-1.
