Annapolis, Md. – The Old Dominion men’s tennis team (1-0) kicked off its 2015 spring season at the Naval Academy (1-2), in a match that the Tennis Monarchs dominated by a score of 6-1 at the Tose Family Tennis Center in Annapolis, Maryland on Sunday.
The Monarchs kicked off Sunday’s action by winning the double’s point. First, ODU’s tandem of Adam Moundir and Michael Weindl took down Austin Jones and Thomas Pecor (6-3). Old Dominion’s duo of Javier Jover Maestre and Zvonimir Podvinski clinched the double’s point by beating Navy’s Tyler Tossavainen and Aries Wong (6-3).
In singles, No. 43 nationally ranked Carlos Lopez Villa is now a perfect 1-0 on the season, after toppling Navy’s Calvin Mark (6-4, 6-2).
Freshman Michael Weindl made quick work of Austin Jones (6-0, 6-3), giving the Monarchs their first team point of the single’s session. Zvonimir Podvinski (ODU) defeated Navy’s Aries Wong in straight sets (7-5, 6-3), lifting Old Dominion to a 4-0 advantage in the match.
On Court No. 2, Old Dominion’s freshman Adam Moudir was too much for Austin Jones (4-6, 7-6, 6-3). Also victorious for the Tennis Monarchs on Sunday, was freshman Javier Jover Maestre (ODU), who got the better of Walker Sims (6-3, 3-6, 7-5) in a tight three-setter, giving ODU a 6-1 win over the Mids.
On Saturday, No. 45 BYU (3-0) def. Navy (0-1), 5-2; however, the Mids swept St. Francis 7-0 later that same day.

Old Dominion will be back in action on Fri, Jan 23, when the Tennis monarchs will travel to take on Conference USA foe UTSA in San Antonio, Texas before making a road trip to Houston for a showdown against C-USA opponent Rice on Sun, Jan 25.
