Three Lady Monarchs Earn All-State Honors

NORFOLK, Va. -- The Virginia Sports Information Directors named Old Dominion field hockey players Sarah Breen, Megan Byas and Rosario Villagra to the Virginia All-State field hockey, which was announced Friday afternoon.

Villagra was named to the All-State First Team, while Breen and Byas earned second team laurels.

A Salta, Argentina native, Villagra earned first team accolades for the second-consecutive season. She led the team with 26 points on eight goals and a team-leading 10 assists, en route to First Team All-Big East honors. She ranked sixth in the conference in points per game (1.37) and third in assists per game (0.53). Villagra notched 102 points on 35 goals and 32 assists during her career. Along with Smither, she was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team and earned Player of the Week honors twice during the year. She closed the season with Second Team All-South Region and Third Team Synapse Sports All-American honors and was selected to play in the 2014 Victory Sports Tours / NFHCA Division I Senior game.

Breen was tabbed to the second team, earning All-State accolades for the second time in her career. As a freshman, she was named to the first team. The junior midfielder ranked first on the team in goals (10), which ranked sixth in the conference and was second in points (22). She also led the team with four game-winning goals. For her efforts, she was named to the Player of the Week Honor Roll twice this season and First-Team All-BIG EAST. The Melbourne, Australia native capped the season with her second-career First Team All-South Region honors and was named a Longstreth/NFHCA Third Team All-American. Breen has notched 81 career points on 34 goals and 13 assists.

Byas is making her first appearance on the all-state team after collecting nine points on three goals and three assists as a defender. One of her three goals was the game-winner against No. 6 Virginia. She anchored the back line to six shutouts and a 1.51 goals-against average that ranked second in the BIG EAST. During the season, she was named the Player of the Week (Sept. 10) and has made an appearance on the honor roll. At the conclusion of the regular season, Byas earned Second Team All-BIG EAST honors and Second Team All-Region laurels.

The Lady Monarchs concluded the season with an 11-8 overall record and a 4-1 BIG EAST mark.
