NORFOLK, Va. – Senior midfielder Kelsey Smither and junior midfielder Sarah Breen of the Old Dominion field hockey team were named to the 2014 Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division I All-American Teams, as announced on Monday morning.
Smither was selected to the second team for the second time in her career, while Breen was tabbed to the third team after she earned third team laurels as a freshman.
Smither earned Second Team All-American honors for the second-consecutive year, as the Suffolk, Va. native finished the season ranked second on the team in assists with six in 19 games. She was also part of the defensive unit that has allowed just 29 goals and posted six shutouts.
Smither was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team and closed out the season earning First Team All-BIG EAST honors, First Team All-South Region laurels and was named a Second Team Synapse Sports All-American. She was also selected to participate in the 2014 Victory Sports Tours / NFHCA Division I Senior game. The midfielder started in all 86 contests in which she has played over her career and notched 56 points on 44 assists and six goals.
Breen was tabbed to the third team, earning All-American accolades for the second time in her career. As a freshman, she was named to the third team. The junior midfielder ranked first on the team in goals (10), which ranked sixth in the conference and was second in points (22). She also led the team with four game-winning goals.
For her efforts, she was named to the Player of the Week Honor Roll twice this season and First Team All-BIG EAST. The Melbourne, Australia native capped the season with her second-career First Team All-South Region honors. Breen has notched 81 career points on 34 goals and 13 assists.
The Lady Monarchs concluded the season with an 11-8 overall record and a 4-1 BIG EAST mark.
