WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – On the second day of the William & Mary Invitational at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center, Old Dominion won two-of-three doubles matches against Penn State.
Carlos Lopez Villa, ranked 42nd in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Preseason Poll, defeated Harvard’s Sebastian Beltrame 6-3, 6-4. It was the only singles victory for the Monarchs on the day.
Adam Moundir fell to Alex Steinroeder 6-3, 6-2. Nicky Hu defeated Theophile Lanthiez 6-1, 6-4. Michael Weindl lost his match with Kenny Tao 6-4, 6-3.
Harvard’s Grant Solomon earned a 6-1, 6-3 decision over Javier Jover Maestre. Zvonimir Podvinski took Shaun Chaudhuri to three sets, but went down 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Darragh Glavin lost to Andrew Ball 6-1, 6-0. Davis Botti fell to Jean Thirouin 6-4, 6-0.
Old Dominion faced off against Penn State and host William & Mary in doubles action. Moundir and Weindl won the first contest against the Nittany Lions, defeating No. 29 Leo Stakhovsky and Mike Reilly 8-6. Lopez Villa and Lantiez took the second match 8-5 over Roman Trkulja and Aws Laaribi. Christian Lutschaunig and Nika Dolidze won the final match for Penn State with a 6-3, 6-2 victory against Jovier Maestre and Podvinski.
The Tribe took all three doubles matches against the Monarchs. Moundir and Weindl fell to Christian Cargill and Will Juggins 8-5. Addison Appleby and teammate Luqman Ebrahim won the second match 8-6 against Lopez Villa and Lanthiez. In the final match, Jover Maestre and Glavin were on the wrong end of an 8-3 final to Damon Niquet and Lars de Boer.
Old Dominion will begin the final day of the William & Mary Invitational with 9 a.m. doubles action against Penn State.
