VIRGINIA BEACH - Former Old Dominion University swimming and diving head coach Joe Gentry passed away Thursday after a long battle with cancer.

Gentry coached Old Dominion from 1985-91 following a 15-year coaching career at the University of Tennessee, where while coaching as an assistant, the men’s squad won the 1978 NCAA national championship.

In 1995, Gentry became the first Head Swimming Coach at Cox High School in Virginia Beach and led the girls’ team to eight region titles and nine regional boys’ titles.  Gentry led the Cox boys to a Group AAA state title in 2012 and a state runner-up finish in 2011.

Funeral arrangements for Joe Gentry have been made and are as follows.

Visitation:      Friday, November 28           6-8:00 p.m.    @ HD Oliver Funeral Home in Hilltop

Memorial Service:    Saturday, November 29      11:00 a.m.      @ Eastern Shore Chapel
