Senior Day Recognition: Defense and Special Teams

Saturday marks Old Dominion’s final home game of the season as the Monarchs host Louisiana Tech at 1 p.m.  The game will be the final home contest for ODU’s 15 seniors.  Today is the second of three parts highlighting this year’s senior class.

Today we look at the seniors on the defensive side of the ball and special teams.

Eriq Lewis• CB • 6-0, 178 • Washington, D.C.
A team captain, Lewis has played in all 10 games this season, starting in nine of them.  A team captain, he had 39 tackles, three tackles for loss, a sack and a blocked punt.  As a redshirt freshman in 2011, Lewis was named All-CAA after recording 41 tackles, five interceptions and three forced fumbles.  His five interceptions is a single-season school record.

Reggie Owens • 6-0, 189 • Virginia Beach, Va.
Owens has started 22-straight games at cornerback for Old Dominion notching 25 tackles, two force fumbles and a sack so far this season.  He has two career interceptions, including making his first INT in the 2012 playoffs against Coastal Carolina.

Andre Simmons • 6-0, 211 • Lorton, Va.
A two-time team captain, Simmons has played in nine games this season.  He moved from safety to linebacker this season to help out the Monarchs’ depth at the position. Last season at safety, Simmons started all 12 games at safety and was second on the team with 75 tackles.

 

Rick Lovato • LS • 6-2, 233 • Middletown, N.J.
A four-year starter at long snapper, Lovato has been steady on punt and extra point/field goal snaps for the last four years.  He has four tackles in his career.  He was named FCS Fabulous 50 All-American during his sophomore year after having a flawless season handling all snapping duties.
