NORFOLK, Va. – Four Lady Monarchs recorded double digits in Old Dominion’s 65-58 victory over cross-town rival William & Mary on Monday night at the Ted Constant Convocation Center. ODU improves to 2-0 on the season while handing W&M (1-1) their first loss of the year.
The Lady Monarchs stormed out of the gates, taking a 9-2 lead at the 16:37 mark of the first half, causing a Tribe timeout. Following the timeout, William & Mary took a 10-9 lead with 14 minutes remaining in the opening half. W&M’s Marlena Tremba scored eight early points before picking up her third foul at the 13:12 mark and sitting the rest of the half.
With 6:14 to play, Odegua Oigbokie’s layup put the Lady Monarchs up by seven (26-19). By halftime, Old Dominion held onto a 34-26 lead, behind Chelisa Painter’s 11 points and five rebounds. Oigbokie shot 3-4 from the floor in the first half for eight points and five rebounds.
At the half, Old Dominion shot a blistering 52.2% (12-23) from the floor and 80% (8-10) from the free-throw line, while connecting on 2-7 (28.6%) from deep. ODU's bench has outscored the Tribe's 11-6, while the Lady Monarchs are dominating points in the paint (16-6).
In the opening 20 minutes which entailed six lead changes and two ties, William & Mary connected on 33.3% (10-33) on the field goal attempts, 5-8 (62.5%) from three and 25% (1-4) from the charity stripe.
The Lady Monarchs forced a Tribe timeout with 16:15 to play in the second half after claiming a 41-30 advantage behind a 7-2 run. ODU increased its lead to 16 before W&M cut its deficit to six with 9:43 remaining. Seconds later with the shot-clock winding down, LaQuanda Younger drilled a three pointer to stretch the lead back to nine.
The Tribe cut their deficit down to two points with 5:04 to play, before Tiffany Minor drilled a three at the 4:11 mark, making the score 57-52. Jennie Simms answered the Tribe’s call once again with a three-pointer of her own, putting the Lady Monarchs up 63-56 with 1:56 showing on the game-clock and ultimately the victory.
Simms recorded her career high in points (15) and rebounds (10), resulting in her first collegiate double-double of her young career. Also in double figures for the Lady Monarchs were Chelisa Painter (13 points, eight rebounds), Tiffany Minor (13 points, seven rebounds) and Odegua Oigbokie (11 points, six rebounds). Destinee Young ended the contest with a career high five blocks.
Old Dominion held advantages in rebounds (47-25), assists (16-14), fast break points (10-4) and bench points (22-16).

Old Dominion will be back on the hardwood Thursday, Nov. 20 against No. 7 ranked Duke. Tipoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.
