Two Monarchs Advance to Round of 16 at ITA Regional Championships

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Old Dominion men’s tennis is through day three of the ITA Atlantic Regional Championship, hosted by the University of Virginia. Singles and doubles champions earn a spot at the ITA National Indoor Championships, which will be played at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.

Other teams competing in the regional championship include: Virginia Tech, Liberty, Virginia Commonwealth, James Madison, Penn State, UMBC, Duquesne, George Washington, George Mason, William & Mary, Temple, Navy, Radford, Bucknell, St. Joseph’s, Longwood, Richmond, and Villanova.

In singles action, Michael Weindl started his weekend with a 6-4, 6-4 decision over Liberty’s Dillon Segur, then followed with a close 6-3, 6-4 loss to Virginia Tech’s Amerigo Contini, who was ranked 14th in the ITA Preseason Poll.

Zvonomir Podvinsky battled with George Mason’s Aaron Capitel, earning the win 6-1, 4-6, 7-5. The junior then fell to UMBC’s Justin Carter 6-2, 2-6, 7-5.

Adam Moundir received a first-round bye and earned a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Villanova’s Chris Seitz. The freshman was then defeated 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 by Jaio Monteiro of Virginia Tech.

Carlos Lopez Villa also had an opening bye and followed with consecutive wins. The senior took the match against James Madison’s Maxi Branth 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 and then took down Virginia Commonwealth’s Michal Voscek 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Lopez Villa will square off against Penn State’s Tomas Hanzlik on Sunday.

Theophile Lanthiez is 3-0 after defeating Georgetown’s Peter Beatty 7-6, 6-4, George Washington’s Danil Zelenkov 6-3, 6-3, and UMBC’s Melker Svard 3-6, 7-5, 6-2. The freshman plays again Sunday and will face Virginia Tech’s Andreas Bjerrehus, who was ranked 58th in the Preseason Poll.

Javier Jover Maestre had a bye in the opening round and earned a tough 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 decision over Navy’s Thomas Pecor. Richmond’s Jacob Dunbar then took down the freshman 6-3, 6-2.
