BLACKSBURG, Va. – Old Dominion women’s tennis has played the first two days of the five-day USTA/ITA Atlantic Regional Championship, hosted by Virginia Tech.
Other teams competing include: Virginia, Maryland, William & Mary, Virginia Commonwealth, Penn State, James Madison, Richmond, Pittsburgh, Georgetown, Liberty, Radford, Temple, UMBC, Navy, George Washington, St. Joseph’s, Longwood, Duquesne, Delaware, Marshall and Norfolk State.
In singles action, Borislava Botusharova took her first match 6-1, 6-0 against Kylie Isaacs of Duquesne. The freshman will play Daria Berezhnaya of VCU next.
Nikol Hristova advanced with a 6-3, 6-4 decision over Virginia Tech’s Katherine Butler. Next up for the junior is a match against Marshall’s Kai Broomfield.
Virginia Tech’s Ilinca Stoica, ranked 64th in the ITA Preseason poll, defeated Ivana Vukovic 6-2, 6-1.
Following a bye, Botusharova and teammate Hristova earned an 8-2 win in doubles action against Longwood’s Malin Allgurin and Paloma Alotorre. The pair will play Virginia Commonwealth’s Salome Kvitashvili and Olga Barscheheuskaya.
Novakovic and Vukovic also received a bye on Friday. The duo defeated George Washington’s Marie-Louise Decamps and Taylor Nederlander 8-3 and is slated for a match with Cassie Mercer and Skylar Morton of Virginia. Novakovic and Vukovic also played George Washington’s Grace Egger and Teodara Radosavljevic, but fell 8-4.
TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE
Singles and doubles action will continue Sunday. Winners of the singles and doubles draws will receive automatic berths to the ITA National Indoor Championships, held Nov. 6-9 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
