POWELL’S POINT, NC—Old Dominion University junior Ashton Newsom (Chesapeake, Va.) fired a three under par 68 and leads the ODU/Outerbanks Collegiate after one round at the par 71/6550 yard Kilmarlic Golf course.
In the team competition, Maryland and Drake are tied with 294, while the Monarchs are in third at 295, followed by Drexel with a 296 in the 16-team event.
Newsom has a two stroke lead over Gaston Bertinotti of Campbell and Samuel Matthew of the University of South Dakota, both of whom shot 70 in today’s first round.
The Monarchs have four players in the top 20. Joining Newsom is freshman Aaron Van DenDungen (Hertogenbosh, Netherlands), who is playing as an individual, sophomore Thomas Henderson (Sterling, MA.) and junior Seth Sweet (Madison, ME.). Van Den Dungen is tied for fourth with an even par 71, Henderson is seventh with a 72 and Sweet who is also playing as an individual is 20th at 74.
Newsom leads the tournament in total birdies with six and also leads in par 4 scoring at 3.78 (-2) on a very windy day. Van DenDungen is tied for second with five birdies, while Sweet, is tied for third in par 5 scoring at 4.25 ( -3).
The second round will be Monday beginning at 8:30 a.m.
