HAMDEN, Conn. – The 19th-ranked Old Dominion field hockey team picked up a non-conference win on Sunday afternoon, taking down the Quinnipiac Bobcats, 3-1, at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey Turf Complex.

The Lady Monarchs improved to 7-6 overall, while the Bobcats fell to 5-8 on the season.

After just over 24 minutes of scoreless play in the first half, the Lady Monarchs lit up the scoreboard twice to take a 2-0 lead over the Bobcats. Junior midfielder Sarah Breen (Melbourne, Australia) scored both tallies for Old Dominion, including one with no time on the clock. With her two goals, she brings her tally to seven on the season. Her two goals were assisted by Nicole Goff (Collegeville, Pa.), along with and Emily Harting (Lititz, Pa.) and Danielle Grega (Kingstown, Pa.).

The ODU defense was a steel curtain in the first half, allowing no shots from the Bobcats. The Lady Monarchs registered seven shots and five on goal to go along with their three penalty corners.

Quinnipiac started the second half strong, registering four shots and scoring 4:39 into the final period to pull within one (2-1).

With 3:46 remaining in the game, the Lady Monarchs were awarded a penalty stroke that was taken by Harting. She sent the ball past the keeper to reach the final 3-1 margin.

Freshman Kelly Weaver (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) got her first career start in goal for the Lady Monarchs and finished the game with four saves. Megan Conaboy suffered the loss for Quinnipiac, making seven saves during her time in goal.

ODU dominated the Bobcats in the shot charts, holding a 18-8 edge and a 10-5 edge in shots on goal. The Lady Monarchs also held a 9-6 advantage in penalty corners.

The Lady Monarchs will be back in action on Oct. 17 when they host No. 15 Temple for a 3:00 p.m. contest.
