Monarchs Capture Golfweek Tournament Title

MYRTLE BEACH, SC—ODU’s  Ashton Newsom (Chesapeake, VA.), Seth Sweet (Madison, ME.) and Jamison Randall (Cumberland, RI.) all finished in the top 10 to help lead the Monarchs to the Golfweek Program Challenge Championship Tuesday at the True Blue Course.  The Monarchs fired a 10-under 278 today to win the tournament by three strokes over Jacksonville.

Newsom, a junior shot 69 each day to finish his 54-hole total of 207 and tie for sixth place. Fellow teammates Seth Sweet and Jamison Randall finished at 209 to tie for ninth spot in the tournament, and David Langley tallied a 211 score to tie for 18th.

Tomasz Anderson of Jacksonville State won the medalist title with a 197, five strokes ahead of Colin Monagle of Jacksonville.

Seth Sweet led the tournament in par three scoring at 2.80 (-3), while Newsom was fourth in par four scoring at 3.75 (-6). As a team, the Monarchs 3.93 par four scoring and 4.68 par five scoring was the best in the tournament. ODU tied with Jacksonville and Jacksonville State with three eagles. The Monarchs return to action Sept. 22 and 23 at the VCU Shootout in Richmond, Va.
