NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion sailing team opened up their fall season this weekend in three events. The Monarchs competed at the Navy Women’s Radial Open and the co-ed Navy Laser Open in Annapolis, M.D., as well as hosted the Riley Cup.
Old Dominion competed in the Navy Women’s Radial Open hosted by Navy. Senior, Andrea Luna, placed fourth of 20 in the singlehanded radial boats for the weekend’s events. Luna had five, top-five finishes out of the eight races.
In the singlehanded co-ed Navy Laser Open, the Monarchs had five boats compete against 15 other teams. Junior Joseph David placed seventh in the Laser Open, the best of the Monarchs for this particular race. David had three top-five’s including a win. Andrew Baird and Ethan Lounsbury, finished ninth and 10th respectively.
Sophomore Nathan Fields finished 14th, with three top-five finishes including a first place spot. Freshman Alec Chicoine, his best finish being second place in the first heat, placed 16th, coming in before sailors from St. Mary’s College of Maryland, U.S. Naval Academy, Georgetown University and Drexel University.
The Monarchs had two boats place in the Riley Cup held at Old Dominion. Sailing in the FJ boats, ODU finished in sixth. Freshman Augie Dale and junior Katelyn Talley had a first place finish for team Monarchs in the Division A race, while Jeremy Herrin,and Kaylie Gallagher finished in ninth in the Division B race. Team Big Blue came in ninth overall out of 17 teams that participated in the regatta. Lee Dumaliang and Cady Johnson finished in 12th place in Division A, while Jason Bankert and Travis Carlisle were eighth in Division B.
ODU is back on the water next weekend at the Edward Teach Memorial in Hampton, the Faye Bennet/MAISA Women’s Singles in Annapolis, M.D., and the Nevin’s Trophy race in Kings Point, N.Y.
