NORFOLK, VA—Junior midfielder Ryan Condotta’s goal with 1:40 left in the match lifted the Monarchs (2-2) of Old Dominion to a 1-0 victory over South Florida (2-2) Friday night at the ODU Soccer Complex. The win was the Monarchs second straight win.
“A very good game and a very entertaining one for the fans with two good teams battling,” said ODU head coach Alan Dawson. “Both teams backlines played very, very well. It was all about getting that first goal and fortunately for us we scored late in the match to win it.”
The two teams battled a little more than 88 minutes of scoreless soccer when Condotta got a defensive deflection right at his feet and he drilled a shot from about 16 yards out for the game winner.
The Monarchs outshot USF 17-14 overall and 6-3 in shots on goal. ODU’s goalkeeper Alex Tiesenhausen came up with three saves and his second straight shutout, while USF’s Spasoje Stefanovic had five saves on the night.
The Monarchs, who have lost only to nationally ranked Virginia and North Carolina return to action Tuesday night when they host Longwood at 7 p.m.
