NORFOLK, Va. – A VCU penalty kick in the 89th minute tied the match 1-1 and after two overtimes Old Dominion and Virginia Commonwealth played to a 1-1 stalemate on Friday night at the ODU Soccer Complex. For the second consecutive game, Old Dominion had their largest attendance since 2010, with Friday night's attendance being 679.
ODU head coach Angie Hind said after the match, “What a fantastic game tonight, which was made even moreso by the brilliant crowd we had at the game. I thought we started really well and created some good opportunities in the early stages of the game. Jessie took her goal very well and gave us a well-deserved lead going into halftime. Credit to VCU, who I think has some very good players, they really put us under pressure for most of the second half. After losing the goal with one minute left in regulation time, many teams would have folded but I believe that we took the game to them in overtime and were the team most likely to score. Their goalkeeper certainly kept them in the game. For us and where we are at the moment, this was a great step. We showed such character and togetherness throughout the match.”
The Lady Monarchs were just over one minute away from what would have been their second consecutive game, in which the defense did not allow a goal during regulation; however, VCU’s Maren Johansen converted on an ODU foul in the box at the 88:17 mark.
In the first half, ODU junior defender Jordan Jones played a beautiful lead pass into senior captain Jessie Klamut, who beat VCU's keeper, Emma Kruse, with a shot that fed into the left side of the net giving Old Dominion a 1-0 lead just 6:31 into the match.
At halftime, Old Dominion fired off seven shots compared to Virginia Commonwealth's three; however, the Rams attempted seven corner kicks to the Lady Monarchs' two.
In the 102 minute, Klamut found herself on a breakaway in which she ripped a shot off the crossbar, in what would have been the golden goal for the Lady Monarchs.
For the match, Virginia Commonwealth attempted 18 shots and Old Dominion took 13. The corner kick count was also in the Rams’ favor, 12-5.
VCU’s keeper, Kruse, finished the contest with four saves, while ODU’s Erin Kinz tallied three saves.
Johansen fired off a game high seven shots; Klamut attempted a team-high six shots on Friday night.

The Old Dominion Lady Monarchs will return to the pitch next Thursday, September 4, against Campbell at the ODU Soccer Complex at 5:00 p.m.
