NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion University quarterback Taylor Heinicke was named to the 2014 Maxwell Award Watch List given to the College Football Player of the Year by the Maxwell Club.
ODU is moving up to FBS and Conference USA in 2014 and playing its first full season as a C-USA member.
Heinicke, a senior from Atlanta, Ga., completed 340-of-486 passes for 4,025 yards and 33 touchdowns in 2013. Heinicke became the first FBS quarterback in Virginia to pass for 10,000 career yards and rush for 1,000 yards.
He is the FBS active career leader in seven categories, including passing yards, touchdown passes and total offense. He won the 2012 Walter Payton Award given to the Best Player in the FCS when he passed for an FCS record 5,076 yards and 44 touchdowns while running for 11 more.
Heinicke is the second Monarch to be named to a preseason award watch list, joining Antonio Vaughan who was named to the Paul Hornung Award Watch List.
Semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be announced Nov. 3, 2014, while the three finalists for the award will be unveiled Nov. 24, 2014. The winners of the 2014 Maxwell Award will be announced as part of the Home Depot College Football Awards Show held on Dec. 11, 2014.
ODU opens the 2014 season at home against Hampton on Saturday, Aug. 30.
