NORFOLK, VA--ODU (31-21) freshman secondbaseman Nick Walker belted his fourth homer of the season, but the VMI Keydets (23-22) scored four runs in the fifth to beat ODU, 4-3 to end ODU's four-game winning streak Tuesday evening at Gray-Minor Stadium.
Walker belted his second homer in as many games in the third inning to give ODU a 1-0 lead. ODU added another run in the fifth when Taylor Ostrich doubled home Tyler Urps for a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, VMI scored four runs. Jordan Tarsovich, Eric Mayers, Brandon Angus and Cameron Walker each knocked in runs to give the Keydets a 4-2 lead.
The Monarchs added one run in the eighth when pinchhitter Kurt Sinnen singled home Ben Slaton, but the Monarchs were unable to score again as reliever Berkley Hawkins picked up his third save of the year.
Walker led ODU with two hits, while VMI was led by Jordan Tarsovich, Will Connerley and Eric Mayers with two hits each.
ODU returns to action this weekend when they host the Blackbirds of LIU with a Friday night game at 6 p.m. , then a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1:00 on senior day.
