EDMOND, OK—ODU’s David Langley tied for 12th at the 2014 Conference USA Golf Championship at the Oak Tree Country Club. As a team, the Monarchs finished ninth.
In an exciting final round, Rice came back from a six-stroke deficit to win the 2014 Conference USA Men's Golf Championship with a 54-hole team total of 861 (293-282-286) at Oak Tree Country Club (par 70/6,861) on Wednesday. Matt Mabrey of Tulsa won individual medalist honors after carding a 1-under 209 (70-69-70) in the three-round event.
The Owls entered the final round of play tied for fourth place and six shots behind leader Tulsa. Despite temperatures in the mid-50s and winds over 20 mph, Rice carded a round-best 286 in the final round to jump the field for a one-stroke victory and earn the program's first C-USA Men's Golf title. Freshman Alexander Levy led the day-three surge, registering a 1-under 69 to be the only player in the field to come in under par in the final round. Teammate Tommy Economou finished third overall with a 2-over 212 (70-71-71) while Kevin Reilly tied for fourth at +3 (68-73-72=213).
No. 16 UAB garnered runner-up accolades, finishing just one stroke behind Rice (290-283-289=862). The Blazers were buoyed by a pair of top-10 finishers in Martin Rohwer (9th, 216) and No. 74 Paul Dunne (t10th, 217).
Tulsa took third place (866) but boasted the top two individual performances. Matt Mabrey took individual medalist honors with a 1-under 209 to be the only player under par for the tournament. Mabrey edged teammate and 36-hole leader Logan McCracken, who finished the competition in second place at 1-over 211. McCracken led the field in par-4 scoring (-2, 3.94), and Mabrey was second in both par-3 (E, 3.00) and par-4 (E, 4.00) scoring.
