DENVER, Colo. - The Old Dominion University women's lacrosse team dropped an 18-6 decision to the No. 20-ranked Denver Pioneers Sunday afternoon.
Denver (15-1) came out of the gate quickly to lead 2-0 before ODU (3-11) junior midfielder Christina Rea scored her first of three goals on the day to trim the Pioneer lead to 2-1. Denver responded with three straight goals to go up 5-1.
Lady Monarchs sophomore midfielder Mary Margaret McCaleb answered at 19:20 off a free position shot to score her first of two goals on the day and trimmed the DU lead to 5-2.
The Pioneers continued the offense in the first half with seven more goals, while Rea scored at 5:08 as Denver led 12-3 at the half.
Denver began the second half with two more goals. Rea tallied her hat trick at 15:45 off a free postion shot and McCaleb scored her second goal to make the Denver lead 14-5.
ODU senior attacker Emily Austerberry scored her fifth goal of the weekend at 6:04 in the second half, but Denver went on to win 18-6.
Old Dominion freshman goalkeeper Maggi Buckley came in for junior co-captain Karen Hayde and made five saves in 49+ minutes.
